About Me

I have, over many years, in the NHS developed specialist skills in the assessment of children and young people on the Autism Spectrum.

I qualified in 1976  and was appointed a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in 1995. I developed my clinical expertise in this vitally important area  through specialist training in Internationally recognised assessment methods and extensive experience in assessing children referred for ASC assessments in a range of settings and with a range of Specialist Professionals both in the NHS and Education.

I have visited a number of Specialist Centres in England with professional colleagues  from Hampshire when we were developing our own NHS based assessment services a number of years ago.

I am very much aware of the challenges that Autism Spectrum Conditions present for parents and others. I have considerable experience in managing the associated  difficulties frequently seen in children with Autism Spectrum Conditions. These can include ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, OCD, Sensory issues, emotional regulation difficulties and learning. These of course are in addition to the core aspects of difficulties in communication and socialisation.

I know the unique skills that other professionals are able to use to assist ASC children; I am able to signpost following the ASC assessment to ensure appropriate and judicious follow up when necessary  Such professionals include Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapist, Paediatricians, Child Psychiatrists and other Specialist Services.

I have a particular interest and experience in the assessment of children described as Pathologically Demand Avoidant. I am aware that it is not yet included in Internationally recognised classification systems. It is, however, recognised in various parts of the UK because of it's unique pragmatic description of a constellation of behaviours.

I have taken a key role in promoting pathways for the assessment of children on the Autism Spectrum in the NHS with Specialist CAMHS, Paediatrics and Education. I was  commissioned to examine  pathways within Hampshire Specialist CAMHS Services for Autism Spectrum referrals. I am very much aware that Autism Assessment Services remain unevenly developed within the NHS.

Since leaving the Health Service in May 2013, I am now working independently continuing in my specialised interest in the assessment of children who may have difficulties as part of the Autism Spectrum.

I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Practitioner Psychologist. I am Chartered by the British Psychological Society. I am a member of the Association of Child Psychologists in Private Practice and the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
